I was overweight most of my youth.

For as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was going the military.

However, upon graduating from high school weighing 281 lbs and a size 24, the Services would not take me.

I can remember the day like it was yesterday, “Why don’t you go to college and lose some weight?” Said the recruiter. So, I did. For the next five years, I went to college got and education and starved myself, lost 140 lbs. In 1999, my dream came true when I enlisted in the military.

For the next 20 years, I struggled with my weight. I went from 138 to 170 lbs. I went through 20 years of yo-yo dieting and starving myself to make weight. I would barely make my military weigh-in. I always managed to make my weigh-ins by starving myself. For years, I struggled with my weight and I tried everything from the Atkins diet to starving myself, to fasting to starting myself, etc. I became a yo-yo dieter and completely messed up my metabolism and my hormones were in chaos.

Until the day I met Melanie. Melanie taught me how to eat, she taught me how to have a healthy relationship with food and how to manage and control my cravings. Not only did Melanie help me through the days when I thought that I would give up; when it was too hard, she talked me off the ledge. Melanie changed my life.

I am currently finishing up my first fat loss phase and going into reverse diet through the holidays, I looked at the scale and the weight was exactly what it was in 1999 when I enlisted in the military. However, this time, it is different. This time, I know how to manage food cravings, I do not look at food as bad or good, I look at it as nourishment for my body and energy for my workouts. I eat what I want, but within my macros and calories. I do not starve myself or over do it with the cardio. I have never been happier. I have been able to lose the weight by just managing my macros at 1,500 and walking 10,000 steps every day. No crash diets, no starving myself, no long and no multiple cardio sessions.

This week, I am about to start my reverse diet in preparation for my next fat loss phase. My goal weight is 130 lbs. Although I am not there yet, I know that with hard work, consistency, determination, and Melanie’s coaching and guidance I will get to my goal.

I Purchased an exercise program that required more equipment than I had at home.

I felt I needed to stay home until covid calmed down here so I needed help making this program work for me at home. I had been a yoyo dieter / exerciser for years. In the past couple of years I had my first child, and was unhappy with my body, both in looks and in health after pregnancy. This was despite being reasonably healthy during my pregnancy. I had tried everything, or so I thought, but nothing stuck. I felt I was just made this way and should learn to live with being out of shape. Melanie has taught me this is not the case! My mindset had changed by the time Melanie and I started working together. I first met Melanie as a private yoga instructor for a group of girlfriends over 6 years ago. After I moved to Florida, I was still able to participate in the yoga class virtually and stay connected. I then asked Melanie to work with me on my own personal weight loss and strength training needs.

I had finally come to peace with the fact that I would always struggle with my weight. I love working out and I thought I knew everything there was to know about nutrition and eating habits until Melanie came along. Melanie was my last ditch attempt at losing weight before I decided I would just give up. I had spent the previous 9 years since I had my daughter being told by doctors that I needed to lose weight, but them providing me with no or very unhelpful guidance in how to do so. This culminated with a doctor telling me the only way I would lose weight was if I went on a 1,000 calorie a day diet of protein shakes and veggies. Previous doctors had told me I would lose weight if I got a handle on my stress. One told me to start taking the stairs instead of the elevator after I told her that I worked out in the gym 6 days a week. I’ve worked out religiously for 20 years, but I never understood nutrition which led to a vicious pattern of restricting food and then binging because I was so hungry. Every time I tried something new to lose weight, I would end up gaining some more. Then came COVID. I was stuck in the house with a 7 year old trying to do virtual school and also work full time. My husband had to continue to work outside the home. My anxiety was through the roof and I ate all my feelings. I gained 30 pounds in a short period of time. 

My goal has never been to lose a massive amount of weight. I just wanted to feel like myself again. Fit into my clothes again. So far, I’ve lost 10% of my body weight and the clothes that were packed away fit again. Best of all, I feel so strong and healthy and I feel like I’m setting a good example for my daughter.

Melanie’s greatest quality as a coach is her kindness. She is always supportive and never judgmental. Whenever I have a bad week and feel like a failure, she sends me motivating messages that make me feel like I’m normal and I can get right back to the plan. She takes all aspects of my life into consideration. Working full time, being a mom, hormone changes, sleep changes, holidays, and traveling are all acknowledged and considered when coming up with a healthy living plan. She doesn’t pretend like I live in a bubble and am unaffected by outside forces.

She doesn’t hold me to a plan of foods that I don’t like. I can eat whatever I want as long as it fits within my macros. Her workouts are very easy to follow and make the best use of my time. I actually spend less time in the gym now than I did before I started working with her. Working smarter, not harder. I’m still a work in progress, but I’m gaining my confidence back.
